"The Sound of Worthing Pier: I remember..."
Collaborating with local community arts group Creative Waves, Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, local artists and Adur and Worthing Council, this research project centres on the cultural heritage of Worthing Pier. It investigates creative ways of preserving, curating, and communicating the Pier’s heritage, using new approaches to audio-visual representation and by foregrounding the sonic experience.
Led by University of Portsmouth’s Steve Whitford and co-researcher Dr Yael Friedman, they are utilising immersive audio-recording (ambisonics) and AI (artificial intelligence) film editing to enhance the immersive experience of representations of the past, and the preservation of contemporary sonic environments.
So far, the project has produced a short pilot film that brings to life vignettes of memories and lived experiences of Worthing Pier over the years.
Credits to: Mac1Sound’s Mark Cheffins who recorded and mixed the binaural soundtrack; Pete Velchev who did the drone filming, and Emily Longhurst who wrote and spoke the narration.
